Congratulations to our Lifetime Achievement Recipient, Vernon Sommers!
Hartville Kitchen Restaurant & Bakery has been a cornerstone of the community for 59 years. Under the leadership of Vernon Sommers, Jr., who began managing the business in 1970 at the age of 20, the business has grown into a destination known for its hospitality, quality, and innovative vision.
Drawing on his experience in maintenance, construction, and farming, Vernon developed a focus on efficient workflows, thoughtful design, and a seamless guest experience. His attention to consistency—in food, service, and overall operations—has become a hallmark of Hartville Kitchen.
In addition to the restaurant and bakery, Hartville Kitchen Foods has expanded significantly. In 1977, Vernon led the launch of Hartville Kitchen Salad Dressing for retail sales. By 2006, a 25,000-square-foot facility was built, and today the company distributes products throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, with plans to grow regionally.
Vernon also expanded the gift shop, working with retail buying groups to enhance product selection and strengthen its reputation as a must-visit destination.
In 2011, Vernon launched a robust training program emphasizing food safety and professional development. Staff complete food safety courses, and managers earn ServSafe certification to maintain high standards. The program also focuses on teamwork and customer service, reflecting Vernon’s commitment to investing in his team.
Among Vernon’s innovations is the addition of holiday dinners, offering guests delicious, prepared meals so they can enjoy the season and spend the day with their families. Another achievement is the live entertainment series, launched in 2002, which continues to bring new life to the banquet spaces, attract visitors from outside the region, and establish Hartville Kitchen as a top destination for dining and entertainment.
Vernon has been an active member at Maple Grove Mennonite Church and has served on the boards of the Mennonite Central Committee, Lehman’s, P. Graham Dunn, and Lake Center Christian School. His service also includes mission work, reflecting his faith and community spirit.
Vernon’s involvement with the chamber extends beyond mere membership. His support of the chamber through corporate sponsorship has allowed events like the annual dinner to be increasingly more successful each year.
Outside of work, Vernon enjoys time with his wife Carol, their children, and grandchildren. He cherishes family time at their cabin, where they share outdoor activities and create lasting memories. His hobbies include softball, hunting, travel, and enjoying the outdoors.
Through vision, hard work, and dedication, Vernon has built Hartville Kitchen into a key part of the region’s identity, leaving a legacy of excellence, innovation, and community impact. He feels truly blessed by the support of his wife, family, and team members.
It is our honor to recognize Vernon as out Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year!
